5 Signs Your Phone Battery Needs Replacing

A phone battery is a wear item — it degrades a little every single charge cycle, and after a year or two of daily use, that wear starts to show up as real, noticeable problems. Here are the five signs we see most often at the counter.

1. It drains much faster than it used to

If you remember your phone easily lasting a full day and now you're reaching for the charger by lunchtime, that's usually the clearest sign of battery wear. Apps and settings can play a role, but a sudden, lasting change in battery life almost always points to the battery itself.

2. It shuts off at 20-30% instead of 0%

A healthy battery should get you close to 0% before shutting down. When a phone powers off at a much higher reported percentage, it usually means the battery can no longer deliver power steadily as it discharges — even though the percentage on screen still says there's charge left.

3. The back panel looks like it's bulging

A swollen battery pushes against the back panel or screen, sometimes causing a visible gap or bulge. This is a safety concern, not just a performance one — if you notice this, stop using the device and bring it in as soon as possible.

4. It runs hot even when you're not using it

Some warmth during heavy use or charging is normal. A phone that stays warm while sitting idle, though, can be a sign the battery is struggling to hold a stable charge.

5. It only works while plugged in

This is the clearest sign of all — if your phone turns off the instant you unplug it, the battery has effectively reached the end of its useful life.
